Maryann Salib
As we traveled to Mexico, I was a bit skeptical to how it would compare to my previous missions trip. But when we got there God completely turned my expectations around. Throughout the week, we were all humbled as we witnessed God working through us. But to me, I was more amazed to see how God was working in us. Everytime I go on a mission trip, I have the same attitude, I am the missionary, going to serve God.. and everytime I forget, that I am Christ’s mission. His goal is me, to change me and conform me more to His likeness while in a time when my ears and heart are so open to Him. I’d like to share with you a few of the things, that God kept hammering into our heads. When you see how much we learned, it is easy to say, oh well, it’s because they were on a mission trip, but truthfully, it’s because we dwelt with God those few days. We prayed, as St.Paul tells us, without ceasing. God was able to speak to us freely without our minds busy and distracted. If we would have that same spirit here, we would learn just as much. There, as we left, we learned an important lesson that was especially significant to me, we never should leave the mission. This doesn’t mean that we should all quit our jobs and serve as missionaries in Africa, but that we have the same mission and calling here in DC as we did there.. to glorify God, and share His love with the nations. We were distinctly told that “the trip ends, but the mission has just begun”. We were all given the task to live radically, to leave our box christianity where we limit God and His power. Which brings me to another thing we learned, God’s power. We witnessed it there, b/c we looked for it, we wanted to see His power.. and He revealed it. So it be through prayers amazingly and immediately answered, or even through the little kids with whom communication was not a problem despite the language barrier.. And we quickly became aware of the devil’s desire to take us away from God’s power.. 1 John 4:4 was constantly repeated to us, and we began to take the fight seriously.. As the bugs annoyed us, we knew it was from the devil, and fought back by the power of God. I could go on and on about the amazing things God taught us there, but I don’t think anyone would read this then, but if u want to know more, ask us.. Ask the high schoolers who really blew me away by how quickly they learned the power of prayer, or the strength we can receive through praise, even in lifting heavy tiles. Lastly, I want to praise God for the unity He built in the group, that each person could call the person beside them family, when before many of us didn’t even know each others’ names. My prayer is that we keep this all, and LIFT JESUS HIGH UP! everyday and everywhere!!
