Mariam Mitry

Today, I combed the hair of Christ.

Today, I massaged the legs and feet of Christ.

Today, I lifted Christ when He fell.

Today, I spooned chai into the mouth of Christ.

Today, I fed Christ okra and bread with my bare hands.

Today, I washed the plate and cup of Christ.

Today, I saw Christ.

Just as the Lord said when you do this unto the least of these, you do it unto me, truly the Lord allowed me to serve Him with my heart and my hands today. Just two days ago, my stomach churned at the mere thought of what I might see, fear ran through my veins with each step we took towards Nirmal Hriday “Kalighat” (The House of the Dying), and my voice shook as I lifted my prayers to the Lord.

The Lord used Kalighat to prepare me for today. In Kalighat there were less than 60 women, well attended for, volunteers tripping over them in assistance, I chose whom to speak with and whom to serve.

But today, I joined Maria, Eddie, and Mark in Prem Dan (The House of the Sick) where more than 100 sick and dying women lay with only five volunteers to wait on them. They cry “unti” (aunt) and there is no choice but to respond. But I did not want a choice today.

Despite language and cultural barriers that left us oceans apart, I was able to look into the eyes of the women and see their need. See their need for someone to care for them, to embrace them, to love them. Christ gave me the gift of seeing their need today. He also gave me the strength, desire, and ability to see them as Himself so that I could serve them as if I was serving Him. Truly, today… today, I experienced Christ.

  1. Everytime I’ve read one of ya’lls blogs, I get the chills! I am sooo excited that you have TRULY gotten to see Christ in each and every one of these people! And in doing that, you are not only serving Christ, but you are also serving LIKE Him! Jesus never once turned from those who were ill (leprosy, etc.) or those who were outcasts of society or those who maybe couldn’t keep themselves clean and take care of themselves…He loved EVERY one of them with an incredible compassion that overcomes ALL of that other stuff! I am praying for you and can’t wait to hear more stories in person! God bless you!
