Day three in haiti has proven to an emotionally challenging experience. We were fortunate enough to connect with this seventy eight year old haitian woman taking care of more than eighty children at an orphanage called "the good samaritan". What we saw as the orphanage doors opened stunned us all. There were so many children, some where partially clothed, most were completely naked, all were eagerto meet and play with this group of strangers.
While talking to the caretaker, we realized that getting more water was her top priority. Without this vital resource the entire orphanage could not function, children couldn't bathe and they couldn't cook the rice (which children then ate raw).
We were happy to help them get more water. We spent time playing with the kids using bubbles and coloring, but their favorite part was just hugging us and sitting on our laps. After playing it was bath time which with eighty kids is quite an adventure. We lined them up and with a bucket dumped water on their head as the next person rubbed and poured more water on their back. No soap, no towel, just water and a lot of thankful kids.
Before we left we passed out tootsie rolls and the kids loved them. Their was one little boy in particular that was sitting on monica's lap sucking on the candy with the paper. She was trying to convince him to give her the tootsie roll so she could unwrap it for him. She couldn't help but think about how we are sometimes like that with God. He wants to take something from us in order to give us something better or more suitable and we can't part. Where's the trust?
Today was beyond tough in every way and we are going back tomorrow to continue to help by building a wall that collapased during the earthquake and a small area for her to cook for all 100 people on the property.
